What Are the Drone Laws in Europe?

There are different subcategories for open operations, which include:

  • A3


The subcategory to use depends on elements such as drone class, weight, nearness to individuals, and operating environment.


Some of the common parameters include:


  • Maximum operation altitude is 120 meters above the nearest point of the ground.

  • Keeping adequate visual contact with the drone.

  • Not conducting any operations over gatherings of individuals.

  • Sticking to the set geographical constraints.

  • Operating a drone that qualifies in the required class or legacy drone category.

  • Registration and operator training.


The open category is mainly used in applications such as recreational flying, photography, basic inspections, and low-risk commercial operations.


  1. Specific Category


The specific category is used for operations that entail greater risks and cannot satisfy all open-category restrictions.


It could be used in operations like:


  • Large distances from the pilot

  • Complex environment

  • Some flights close to people

  • Commercial operations

  • Flights of aircraft that have conditions or features not satisfying the open-category limitations


According to the type of operation, the operator will either obtain the appropriate authorization from the aviation authorities or operate according to the pre-established legal regulations.


An experienced UAV company must do proper risk assessment and make sure that the operating procedures, the pilot’s qualification, the aircraft, and other safety measures satisfy the requirements.


  1. Certified Category


The certified category is designed for operations with the highest risks of the UAS.


This kind of operation may use the aircraft or missions when the consequences of an accident could be very serious. Requirements could include the certification of the UAS, operator certification, and licenses for remote pilots.


Certified operations are less widespread than open- and specific-category operations, but they are essential for the future integration of autonomous and large UAVs into the European airspace.


Do You Need to Register a Drone in Europe?


Many times, drone registration by its operator is mandatory, especially if the drone meets the registration requirements.


The difference should be made clear regarding the drone itself versus the registration of the operator.


According to the European regulations, the individual or the entity that flies the drone must register as a UAS operator with the respective national aviation authority.


It is usually necessary to register if:


  • The drone has a camera or other sensor to collect any personal information, excluding any exemptions.

  • The drone satisfies the specific mass or kinetic energy requirements.

  • The drone is used in situations where registration is mandatory.


Once registered, the operator gets the identification number, which will be displayed on all drones, if required.

Drone Altitude Limits in Europe
