Vector files are one of the most important data formats in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), used to represent real-world geographic features with high spatial accuracy. They store data using three primary geometry types: points, lines, and polygons. Points represent individual locations such as wells, landmarks, utility poles, or survey markers. Lines model linear features like roads, rivers, railways, pipelines, and power lines, while polygons define enclosed areas such as land parcels, forests, lakes, buildings, and administrative boundaries. Unlike raster data, vector data stores precise coordinates, allowing accurate measurement of distances, areas, and perimeters without losing quality when scaled. Each feature can also include attribute information, such as names, classifications, ownership records, or demographic data, enabling spatial and non-spatial analysis. Compared to raster data, vector data requires less storage for many map features and supports efficient spatial analysis, including distance, area, and network calculations. It also stores attribute information, enabling each feature to include descriptive data such as names, classifications, ownership, or population.
