Theme
In ArcView GIS, a theme is the fundamental unit used to organize and display a single layer of geographic data within a map. Each theme represents one type of spatial information, making it easier to manage, visualize, and analyze different geographic features independently or alongside other layers. A theme can contain point, line (arc), polygon, or annotation features that represent real-world objects such as cities, roads, rivers, administrative boundaries, land-use areas, soil types, or elevation points. Every spatial feature is connected to an attribute table that stores descriptive information, allowing users to perform queries, filtering, and spatial analysis. Themes can be customized with different symbols, colors, and labels, as well as turned on or off to control map display. By overlaying multiple themes, users can identify spatial relationships, analyze patterns, and create informative maps. This layered structure is a core feature of ArcView GIS, supporting applications in urban planning, environmental management, transportation, agriculture, and many other geospatial fields.
