Terrestrial LiDAR

Terrestrial LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) is a ground-based remote sensing technology used to collect highly accurate 3D spatial data of natural and built environments. It uses laser scanners mounted on tripods, vehicles, or portable backpack systems to measure the shape and position of surrounding objects. During operation, the scanner emits thousands to millions of laser pulses every second toward surfaces such as buildings, roads, bridges, vegetation, and terrain. Each pulse reflects back to the sensor after striking an object, and the system measures the travel time of the laser to calculate the exact distance. Combined with the scanner's position and orientation, these measurements generate precise X, Y, and Z coordinates for millions of individual points. The resulting dataset, known as a point cloud, provides a highly detailed digital representation of the scanned area. Terrestrial LiDAR is widely used in surveying, engineering, construction, infrastructure inspection, forestry, archaeology, mining, and urban planning because it delivers fast, accurate, and high-resolution spatial data for mapping, analysis, modeling, and documentation.
