FGDC

The Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) is a U.S. government organization that promotes the coordinated development, management, sharing, and use of geospatial data across federal agencies. Established to improve the quality and accessibility of geographic information, the FGDC develops standards, policies, and best practices that ensure consistency and interoperability among spatial datasets. It plays a key role in supporting the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI), enabling organizations to efficiently discover, access, and exchange geospatial information. The FGDC also establishes metadata standards that help users understand the source, accuracy, and purpose of geographic data. By encouraging collaboration among government agencies, state and local organizations, academia, and the private sector, the FGDC reduces duplication of effort, improves data quality, and supports informed decision-making in areas such as environmental management, emergency response, urban planning, transportation, natural resource conservation, and scientific research.

The Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) plays a key role in developing and maintaining the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI), a framework that promotes the sharing, management, and use of geospatial data across government agencies, organizations, and the public. By establishing national geospatial data standards, metadata guidelines, and best practices, the FGDC ensures that geographic information is accurate, consistent, and interoperable. Its collaborative initiatives encourage data sharing, reduce duplication of effort, and improve coordination among federal, state, local, tribal, and private-sector organizations. These efforts enable efficient access to reliable mapping resources and spatial datasets, supporting informed decision-making in environmental management, urban and regional planning, transportation, public safety, emergency response, disaster management, agriculture, natural resource conservation, land administration, and infrastructure development. Through continuous innovation and cooperation, the FGDC strengthens the nation's geospatial capabilities and enhances the effective use of geographic information for research, policy development, and sustainable development.
